365 days of oversharing on the internet

On November 20th 2022, I posted my first blog post to Instagram, which I oh so originally titled, “first blog post” .. nice.

I did however just go back and reread it and it all holds up (if I do say so myself). Just like Abercrombie’s comeback is here to stay, I think so is the blog. In my first blog post I didn’t really say much. All I said was that I was sharing my writing to see if I could write (well) and to connect with people. Which I think I have done both.

Last week, in the greenroom of a comedy club I was chatting with my friend and fellow comic and my blog came up, I thanked him for reading it and he shrugged and said,

“sure, I wouldn't if it sucked.”

So thanks to him and my other good friends for the votes of confidence, I will keep it rollin. I’m on a gravy train with biscuit wheels as they say.

Here are five things I have learned from the blog.

  1. You never know who is paying attention. We all have our own lives. I’m sure we all feel lonely at times. The blog taught me, someone is always listening, reading, watching, supporting, even when they don’t show it. (in a non creepy way, OK). So thank you to all of you, yes you, for reading. It means the world to me.

  2. Consistency adds up. In the past year I have shared 26 blog posts. My OG goal was a blog a week, but life happens. I am planning to share more in the new year. I am proud of the 26 posts I have shared.

  3. I am willing to share more than I realized. I had a friend tell me I was “brave” for the things I share in my blog. At first I was confused, as this was coming from someone who regularly skydives… I thought, brave? From the guy who throws himself out of a plane every other week? My second thought was oh god, am I crazy? Is this too much? But he made it clear he meant that genuinely. It made me realize everyone has their own definition for things. Brave to me is skydiving, brave to him is pouring your soul into the internet for all to see.

  4. Speaking of (over) sharing, I sometimes want to hold back but then I think, why? Time is our most precious resource. If I am going to take your time to read this, it better be good (not me questioning if this post sucks as I say that). But yeah, I don’t want to water things down or alter them. That’s just lame.

  5. We aren’t all that different. I have had so many different people tell me they have connected with my writing. Whether it was about my year of sobriety, the time I almost died, life lessons and all the other thought dumps I have poured into a screen, someone always tells me it resonates. Which again, is one of the main reasons I do this (and standup). To feel less alone, to help others feel less alone. As I have mentioned before, we are all sharing a rock in space. Let’s be nice, have fun. We aren’t here forever.

So, here is your yearly reminder that nothing matters, nobody knows what they’re doing and we’re all gonna die.

To another 365, let’s see what life has in store.

Thank you for being here.

XO!
